The Division of Sports and Arthroscopic Surgery welcomes overseas doctors to visit our division as clinical fellows. The fellowship will be awarded to an orthopaedic surgeon to undergo a six-month training program in the Division of Sports and Arthroscopic Surgery, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, The University of Hong Kong. The awarded fellows will be given the opportunity to join both clinical and research works in the field of sports medicine of shoulder, hip and knee during the fellowship program.

The application of the HKU Sports and Arthroscopic Surgery Fellowship program is opened throughout the year. However, applicants are reminded to submit new application every twelve months if the previous applications are not successful.

In general, the waiting list can be quite long. Early application is therefore advised.

• Duties:

1. The fellow will take part in daily clinical care of the in-patients and outpatients.
2. For patients who require surgery, the fellow will participate in the pre-operation assessment, assist / operate under supervision and the post-operative care of the patient.
3. The fellow is also required to take part in a research project and to write at least one scientific article in English during a 6-month period.
4. The fellow is also required to take part in all the academic and training program organized by the department and the division.
5. The fellow is also required to involve in teaching of medical students.
6. The fellow is also required to carry out other clinical, academic, teaching or research duties as assigned by the Division Chief or his designate;
7. The awarded fellows may be required to work in shift (including night-time work) as assigned by the department. The maximal number of working hours and other details of the working conditions will be governed by the Employment Ordinance of Hong Kong.

• Qualification required:

1. The applicant must be a registered medical practitioner with full registration at the time of application in their country of origin and in good standing.
2. The applicant must have completed the orthopaedic training program in their country of origin or other international orthopaedic training center / examination body.
3. The applicant must have a basic command of oral and written English.
4. Offer is contingent upon granting of limited registration by the Medical Council of Hong Kong.

• Period of appointment: 6 months.
• Emoluments: HK$20,000 per month (honorarium), depending on experience.
• The fellowship does NOT include traveling expense, accommodation expenses, medical and travel insurance during the fellowship period. Fellows are advised to ensure these are organized because accommodation expenses and health care expenses in Hong Kong can be expensive.
• Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, The University of Hong Kong is NOT responsible for providing any accommodation to the successful applicant. The awarded fellows are advised to arrange their own accommodation before they start the fellowship program.

 
For the full clinical fellowship, applicants are requested to submit their application consisting of:

1. A covering letter stating the requested timing for the fellowship (see below)
2. A detailed curriculum vitae
3. A best published scientific paper with applicant as the first author
4. Two letters of recommendation by two different orthopaedic consultants. One of them should be the supervisor / chief of the department, where the applicant work
5. A written proof of current full registration as a medical practitioner in their country of origin; and
6. A written proof of completion of orthopaedic training in their country of origin or other international orthopaedic training center / examination body.

 
There are two 6 monthly fellowships per year, one starting on the 1st January of each year and the other 1st July. Decisions for awarding fellowships are made one year in advance, thus the closing date for application for a particular year will be one year prior to the starting date (i.e for January 2021 fellowship, closing date is 31st December 2019). A telephone interview will be held after the closing date. Unsuccessful applicants will be informed in writing and their names will be removed from the waiting list. Further application by the same applicant for another year will be treated as NEW applications.

The successful applicants will be informed of the results at least eight months before the start of the fellowship program.

The applicant must indicate whether they accept / decline the offer of the fellowship program within two weeks after announcement of the result. Delay in reply may lead to forfeiting of the fellowship award. The decision will be made by the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, The University of Hong Kong.

In case there is any delay in starting of the fellowship, the length of the fellowship program may be shortened or the award of fellowship may be withdrawn. The decision will be made by the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, The University of Hong Kong. The department will not be responsible for any liability or loss due to the shortening or withdrawal of the fellowship program.

Upon completion of the fellowship, a formal report is required from the selected candidate.
