Biography

Professor Kelvin Yeung is a distinguished scholar in the field of orthopaedic biomaterial research, with a particular emphasis on the design of orthopaedic biomaterials, antibacterial nanomaterials, 3D bioprinting, and musculoskeletal tissue engineering. He earned his bachelor’s degree in materials science before advancing to attain both a master’s degree and a PhD in orthopaedic science from the University of Hong Kong’s Medical Faculty. Throughout his career, he has dedicated his research to critical areas such asbone-to-implant osseointegration, bone regeneration, and the development of antibacterial treatments.

Currently, Professor Yeung holds the Ng Chun-Man Professorship in Orthopaedic Bioengineering and serves as a tenured full professor, chief of the research division, and departmental research and postgraduate advisor within the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the School of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine (HKUMed), The University of Hong Kong. His academic stature is further amplified by honorary appointments as a honorary professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at Zhongshan Hospital and as Principal Researcher at the Institute of Spinal Tumour at Fudan University. His scholarly impact is evident, with an impressive h-index of 80according to Scopus, reflecting over 23,000 citations, while his Google Scholar metrics reveal an h-index of 89 with more than 27,000 citations and an i10-index of 267. Honourably, he has been identified as one of the Highly Cited Researchers for 2023 and 2024 (cross-field), Highly Ranked Scholar 2022 (Prior Five Years) in the field of Medicine by ScholarGPS (Global ranking: #7 in Biomaterial; #16 in Orthopaedic Surgery), and he ranks among the Top 1% of scholarsworldwide in biomaterials, as recognized by Clarivate Analytics’ Essential Science Indicators (ESI), and the World’s Top 2% Scientists in standardized citation indicators (Biomedical Engineering) since 2014. In 2024, he was positioned at #1845 globally and #483 in China in the category of materials science by Research.com.

Beyond a robust publication record—including over 300 peer-reviewed SCI journal articles and 46 filed patents in various jurisdictions—Professor Yeung co-founded OrthoSmart Limited with two senior colleagues, effectively bridging the gap between research and clinical application. He also serves as a consultant for several publicly listed medical and biomaterials companies in Hong Kong.

Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Yeung has actively engaged in numerous local and regional competitions, garnering accolades such as the Young Scientist Award (2005), Young Engineer Award (2009), and Faculty Research Output Award (2019). As both principal investigator and co-principal investigator, he has successfully secured funding exceeding HK$92,100,000. A fervent advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, he has trained 7 postdoctoral researchers, 30 PhD students, 19 Master’s students, and 4 undergraduate students, with over 50% representing female, African, or Middle-Eastern backgrounds. His contributions to the scientific community are substantiated by more than 30 awards from various local and international competitions and conferences, alongside invitationsto deliver over 90 plenary lectures, keynotes, and invited talks at prestigiousconferences.

In addition to his research and teaching commitments, Professor Yeung plays an active role in several local and international academic organizations. He serves as Associate Editor for the *Bioactive Materials Journal* (impact factor: 18.0, ranking #1 out of 53 in materials science), is a founding member and current President of the Chinese Association for Biomaterials (CAB), and chairs the Orthopaedic Biomaterials section of the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) USA. He previously acted as Secretary andTreasurer of CAB and Vice-Chair of SFB Orthopaedic Biomaterials. Furthermore, he has been appointed as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs for the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) and Warden of HKU Simon K. Y. Lee Hall by the university, where he oversees initiatives aimed at enhancing student educational development.
